Chess Cake

This was Great Aunt Mildred’s recipe that dates back to the 80’s in her recipe collection.

The term “chess cake” doesn’t have anything to do with the game of chess; rather, it’s thought to be a corruption of the term “cheese cake,” which was a common name for certain types of baked goods in the 19th century. Historically, the term might have referred to cakes made with cheese or a custard-like filling.

1 Stick of Butter
3 Eggs
1 (16oz) Box of yellow cake mix (or chocolate)
Chopped nuts

1 (8oz) package of cream cheese
2 eggs

Mix 1 egg, 1 stick of butter, and 1 box of yellow cake mix together. Press the mixture into the bottom of a 9×13-inch pan.
In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to blend together 1 package of cream cheese, 2 eggs, and 1 box of powdered sugar. Pour this mixture over the cake mixture in the pan.
Sprinkle chopped nuts on top.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.
